The United States has long been a global leader in the development of nuclear technologies. Currently, however, there is no fast neutron testing capability in the United States to support the research and development of advanced fast reactors; the only capability for private companies in the United States is the Bor-60 fast neutron testing facility in the Russian Federation. Developing new reactors and supporting existing reactors requires continuing research and development on new materials and new fuels. To address this issue, the United States Department of Energy has proposed the construction of the Versatile Test Reactor (VTR) in the United States. The VTR will leverage existing United States government and industry investments in nuclear reactors to accelerate its design and construction process, using proven nuclear reactor technology to create a world-class scientific infrastructure.
