The increased efforts to deploy renewable energy technologies in the power industry are animating efforts to upgrade the electricity grid with some focus on the increased efforts in battery storage. Driven by technological progress as well as policy and regulations supporting cleaner energy, renewable energy has been deployed at a historically unprecedented rate in the past few years. The most notable forms of renewable energy being deployed are wind and solar PV. Between the years of 2006 and 2012, solar PV grew 190% in annual capacity growth rate worldwide with wind trailing behind at 40%, and these growth rates are only predicted to rise in the future.
