In 2013, the United Nations (UN) identified 1.2 billion people that did not have access to electricity and pledged to make sure that everyone in the world would have access to electricity by the year 2030. This largely ambitious goal comes with a bigger implication: if 1.2 billion people, not considering the net increase of global population, are plugged into the grid in the next couple decades, how are we going to generate enough power to satisfy the energy demand? The biggest drawback to extracting and utilizing conventional fuels is the environmental repercussions that the world will face as a result of burning carbon and greenhouse gas (GHG) emitting fuels. Other sources of power generation may present a better solution.
