The U.S. priori,za,on of climate change and clean energy development and deployment will likely facilitate energy transitions in Asia and build upon exis,ng clean energy engagement in the region, including the export of LNG. The climate change issue is also one area of strong mutual interest between the U.S. and China, andthere is significant consensus that the two countries should work together coopera, vely towards carbon mi,ga,on and encouraging other countries to follow suit. However, coopera,on in climate and clean energy must be viewed within the context of the growing geopoli, cal rivalry between the two countries, and it is possible that conflict and disagreement in other areas may affect bilateral climate coordina,on and coopera,on. Keeping discussions regarding climate change within mul, lateral forums may be one means ofshielding this issue from other points of fric,on.
